Your core values are what makes up you.

Learning and know what your core values are is an amazing discovery, not to mention it makes everything you are working for a little easier to obtain. Knowing your core values means knowing what you stand for and using this to make choices that will give you a purpose in life and will move you closer to your goals.

That’s not saying it won’t be challenging. Knowing what you values isn’t a fix all, but more of building a foundation on which the rest of your life will be supported. You can make all kinds of goals and repeat daily affirmations until you are blue in the face, but if these goals and affirmations don’t like up with your set of core values all the effort will be for nothing.

When you look at a situation, you can decide whether it is right or wrong, good or bad based on your core values. Your values act as a filter, like light filtered through a window that refracts into beams of glowing light.

Where do Core Values Come From?

Your core values develop over your lifetime, being changed and molded by your experiences and interactions with others. They are influenced by your family, friends, tv, church, your culture, books, events in your life and countless other things.

You can see how this infinite number of interactions and incidents can easily lead to no two people having the same core values. Your experiences make you unique.

That doesn’t mean that they stay static though, as you move through life and experience new things, your values may shift slightly or change completely.

Why do Core Values Exist?

Your core values exist to keep your life on track according to what you value. These values are the foundation and the backbone of your life. They light your path both in your personal life and in your career. When you identify what they are something magical can happen, your life can come alive in ways you haven’t even imagined and illuminate your entire life.

If you don’t know what is important to you, you spend your time just wandering from day to day and can’t decide what you should do with your life. There is such great power in determining what your purpose in life is and living according to your values will lead you to a happiness you’ve never felt before.

When your actions are aligned with your values, you are happy, content and in harmony with life. You feel a sense of peace, even in the most challenging times.

If you aren’t clear on your personal values, how can you figure out what you really want? And how can you be sure that your actions are in line with who you are at your core?

For example, if your main core value is family, but you’re working 70 hours a week and only spend a few hours with your family each week, you will feel an internal stress or conflict. This internal conflict is telling you that your actions are out of line with your core values and that you should take steps to make a change.

Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one’s values.” ~Ayn Rand

How Do I Know What My Core Values Are?

Finding your core values will take a little work and a lot of reflection on your part. You have to listen to your heart to find what really drives you. I will give you a basic exercise that you can complete, but if you need help or want to go more in depth about your core values, contact me!

Get out a pen and some paper. Do this when you have some free time with no distractions. Take a few minutes and brainstorm a list of values that you think you hold. These might include — honor, courage, health, family, abundance, compassion, kindness, etc.

Next, you will want to narrow down this list. Take 2-3 minutes and circle all of the ones that your gut tells you is important. These are your basic core values. This final list will give you the perfect start to really look into your heart and find what is important to you. Don’t go with how you’re supposed to be or what others think you are, just focus on yourself.
